Terms and Definitions


Advisory A method for disseminating hurricane and storm data to the public every 6 hours. Small craft warnings are released as necessary.
Gale Warning A gale warning is issued when sustained winds of 39 to 54 miles per hour associated with a non-tropical storm are expected over the coastal waters and immediate adjacent land areas.
Hurricane When a Tropical Storm reaches winds of 74 mph or more, it is classified as a hurricane.
Hurricane Warning A hurricane is expected to strike your area within 24 hours or less.
Hurricane Watch A hurricane may threaten your area within 48 hours.
Intermediate Advisory A method of updating regular advisory information every 2 to 3 hours as necessary.
Small Craft Advisory Small craft advisories are issued when sustained winds of 24 to 38 mile per hour or seas of 7 feet or greater are expected to occur over water.
Special Advisory Warning given anytime there is a significant change in weather conditions or change in warnings.
Special Marine Warning Special marine warnings are issued when short-lived, frequent wind gusts of 39 miles per hour or greater are occurring or expected to occur over water. These winds are most often associated with thunderstorms. Special marine warnings are also issued when waterspouts are observed or expected to occur over water.
Storm Surge The strong winds associated with hurricanes and tropical storms cause the sea level to rise above normal tidal height with giant wind-driven waves and strong unpredictable currents, sometimes covering 50 miles.
Storm Warning A storm warning is issued when sustained winds of 55 miles per hour associated with a non-tropical storm are expected over coastal waters and immediate adjacent land areas.
Tornado Warning Tornado has been spotted in your area, TAKE SHELTER.
Tornado Watch Tornadoes and severe thunderstorms are possible in your area.
Tropical Depression An area of low pressure, rotary circulation of clouds and winds to 38 mph.
Tropical Disturbance A moving area of thunderstorms in the tropics with a poorly organized rotary circulation.
Tropical Storm Well organized counterclockwise circulation of clouds and winds 39-73 mph. The storm is assigned a name.
Tropical Storm Warning The likelihood of winds between 39-73 mph effecting the area within 24 hours.
Tropical Storm Watch The possibility of winds between 39-73 mph effecting the area within 48 hours.
